Pubic Symphysis Block

For those with chronic pelvic pain that interferes with walking, using stairs and other leg movement activities, a pubic symphysis injury could be the possible cause. The pubic symphysis is located at the bottom of the pelvis and can be the source of moderate to severe groin pain if there are ligaments or other tissues injured in the area. One injection treatment option to diagnose a pubic symphysis injury and offer relief is a pubic symphysis block injection, which is available at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine in the Atlanta area.

Pubic symphysis pain is usually felt in the groin, pelvis and upper thighs, which can make it difficult to diagnose. The pubic symphysis is a small joint that connects to the two sides of the pelvic bone and allows for certain movements that require the legs to open wider or extend. If the ligaments that are attached to and surrounding the pubic symphysis tear or this small disc “slips,” it can cause pain in the groin area. Patients may feel pelvic pain when walking, using stairs, squatting, kicking or even coughing.

Pelvic Nerve Block for Relief and Diagnosis

If a patient is having symptoms that may be due to a pubic symphysis injury, performing a pubic symphysis nerve block can offer relief and help with diagnosis. This injection is guided using x-ray imaging to deliver anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory steroid to the area. The steroid helps block pain signals to the brain to give relief. Also, if this relieves the pain, it can help identify the pubic symphysis as the source of pelvic pain to help create a long-term treatment plan.

Pubic symphysis injuries are more common with sports that involve kicking or lunging like swimming, soccer or hockey but can occur in many activities. Some people with pubic symphysis injuries suffer for years without knowing the exact cause of their pain. If you have groin or pelvic pain that is affecting your function, contact us at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine. We can help diagnose and treat the source of your pain.

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!
