Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

When nerves are damaged or dysfunctional, they can cause intense pain. Complex regional pain syndrome, or CRPS, is a nerve disorder where the affected nerves signal pain, even when there is no injury. CRPS is not completely understood, as the cause is sometimes unknown, and there is no cure. However, there are treatments available at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine that give those with CRPS relief from chronic pain and improve their quality of life.

The onset of CRPS may occur after an injury or for no reason at all. Young adults in their 20s or 30s are the most likely to suffer from this disorder. CRPS is a dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system, sending pain signals at a high level from the affected area. Limbs and extremities are most likely to be affected, such as the arms, hands, legs and feet. Symptoms can include:

  • A burning pain in the affected area
  • Joints in the affected area can become swollen and stiff
  • The skin can feel colder or warmer than unaffected areas
  • Increased sensitivity – even a light touch can cause pain
  • Decreased mobility of the affected limb or appendage

The constant, chronic pain felt by those with CRPS is the most common symptom. Other symptoms vary in length and intensity, depending on the patient.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
