Post Laminectomy Syndrome

When a patient undergoes back surgery and still suffers from chronic back pain after the procedure, it is called post-laminectomy syndrome, or failed back syndrome. This is a frustrating condition that is the result of many factors that may or may not be related to the surgery. Finding the cause of the pain and the right treatment is vital to alleviate the pain. Our pain experts at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine use the most advanced methods to diagnose and treat post-laminectomy syndrome and give patients relief from their chronic pain.

Back surgery is usually the last resort for treating back pain when conservative treatments have failed. A spine or back surgery may be recommended if there is visible damage to the spinal vertebrae, lamina or discs that are believed to be causing chronic pain. Whether it is a laminectomy or other type of spine surgery, the goal is to relieve the pain. Unfortunately, many patients experience post-laminectomy, or failed back syndrome, and still are suffering after undergoing surgery.

Causes of Failed Back Syndrome

There are many reasons that back surgery may not stop chronic pain. There is a chance that even though a damaged spinal component could be causing the pain, it may not be the only source of pain. Although the spine is repaired, there is inflammation or other types of nerve root compression that continue to result in chronic back pain. Additionally, the surgery may have created scar tissue or damaged nerves, causing pain in the same location.

Treating Post Laminectomy Syndrome

At Medici Orthopaedics & Spine, we focus on finding the source of pain and providing non-invasive treatments for relief. Our multidisciplinary approach is used to address the source of the pain and give our patients options to block or mitigate the pain. Every treatment plan for failed back syndrome may be different but can include physical therapy, medication management, spinal cord stimulation and injection therapy.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
