Referred Pain

When you feel pain in an area of your body, the source of the pain is not always in the same place. Pain is only an interpretation of nerve signals by the brain. When it interprets the message incorrectly or the wrong message is sent, it can cause referred pain. Treating referred pain requires finding the original source of the pain and correcting the signal being sent to the brain. Our pain specialists at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine can diagnose and treat referred pain at our clinics in the Atlanta area.

Referred pain is complicated and can be difficult to diagnose. The first step in diagnosis is determining whether there is any condition that could be causing pain in the area. If your leg aches, it is common to assume there is an issue affecting the leg. However, if it is referred pain, it could be caused by nerve compression in the back or the nervous system could be interpreting the location of the pain incorrectly. Finding the source of the pain can be very complex. In some cases, the cause is not found at all.

Treating Referred Pain

All pain is real, whether it is referred, radiating or localized pain. Our pain specialists at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine understand that pain is subjective to the patient, and it is our job to help stop or manage the pain using our vast medical resources. Finding the source of the referred pain is always preferable. When this is not possible, we can manage pain by interrupting or mitigating the pain signal. Treating the source of the pain or using methods like nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, physical therapy and medication management are all possible options for referred pain treatment plans.

If you suffer from chronic or referred pain and have been unsuccessful at finding relief, come see us at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine. We will help find a solution to manage the pain and improve your quality of life.

Related Conditions & Pain Sources

At Medici Orthopaedics & Spine, we know that pain often involves more than one area or condition. What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
