TMJ Syndrome

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or disorder involves the jaw joint, tendons and muscles that are needed for chewing. When the joint is dysfunctional, there may be chronic head pain and functional issues. TMJ syndrome can be caused by many different factors, making it essential to find the source of dysfunction. Medici Orthopaedics & Spine offers accurate diagnosis and treatment for TMJ disorders at our clinics in the Atlanta area.

TMJ syndrome occurs when there is some type of dysfunction in the jaw joint. The teeth may impact the jaw joint and cause TMJ if they are misaligned and put extra stress on the jaw. Orthodontics or dental work can repair teeth issues that affect alignment and put stress on the jaw. Wearing a dental mouthguard to relieve pressure on the joint at night can offer relief if a misalignment of the bite or teeth grinding is the cause of discomfort. However, there are other causes of TMJ syndrome that do not involve dental issues, including arthritis, inflamed tendons or other problems within the joint.

Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Those with TMD can have a variety of symptoms, some that could be misdiagnosed as other issues. The most common symptoms are localized in the jaw area, with jaw or facial pain and a popping or clicking of the jaw when opening or closing. It can become difficult to chew, and the jaw can lock in place. However, someone with TMJ syndrome may not have symptoms in the jaw but have headaches or neck pain that are caused by the joint disorder.

Treatments for TMD may include dental work and dental devices, but if the problem is with the tendons or joint, you may need to see someone besides a dentist. Our pain physicians can offer treatment for arthritis of the jaw joint or inflammation that can offer relief. If you have TMJ syndrome and want to explore treatments for pain relief and improved function, contact Medici Orthopaedics & Spine to schedule a consultation and exam.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
