Knee Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Most people are likely to experience some level of arthritis in their joints in their lifetime, especially the knee joints. There are many different types of arthritis, or inflammation of the joints. The three most common in the knee are rheumatoid, osteoarthritis and post-injury arthritis. Any of these types of arthritis can cause knee pain and limit mobility. There is not a cure for these conditions, but treatments to help are available. The experts at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine can help to slow down knee arthritis degeneration and minimize pain at our clinics in the Atlanta area.

The most common type of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis. This condition speeds up the deterioration of the cartilage in the joint, causing inflammation, pain and limited mobility. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear on the knee joint, which can be worsened by obesity, injuries and other conditions. Osteoarthritis is most common in those of middle age or beyond, whereas rheumatoid or post-injury arthritis can occur earlier in life. Symptoms of knee arthritis include:

  • Swelling of the joint
  • Stiffness
  • Increasing pain, with or without knee use
  • Deteriorating knee stability – locking or buckling
  • Popping or clicking in the knee
  • Decreased range of motion

In most cases, knee arthritis symptoms begin slowly and become worse over time. Starting conservative treatments early can slow the progression and reduce the need for surgery or more aggressive treatment.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
