Lumbar epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are a minimally invasive treatment that delivers anti-inflammatory medication and local anesthetic directly into the epidural space of the lower spine to calm irritated nerves and relieve radiating back and leg pain. Guided by live X-ray, the procedure takes under 30 minutes in an outpatient setting, and most patients experience reduced inflammation and improved mobility within days. ESIs can treat herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease, often delaying or avoiding the need for surgery. When combined with physical therapy and other conservative therapies, ESIs help restore function and quality of life without systemic medications.
